Initial Results from the Afci Reactor-accelerator Coupling Experiments (race) Project

چکیده
The RACE Project, which is being conducted within the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative (AFCI), is a series of accelerator-driven subcritical systems (ADSS) experiments. These ADSS experiments are being conducted with a compact, transportable subcritical assembly at the Idaho State University’s Idaho Accelerator Center (ISU-IAC) in 2004 and with TRIGA reactors at the University of Texas at Austin in 2005 and at the Texas A&M University in 2006. In these experiments, source neutrons are generated by using electron accelerators to induce bremsstrahlung photon-neutron reactions in heavy-metal targets. These accelerator/target systems produce a source of ~10 n/s, which will then initiate fission reactions in the subcritical systems. This paper includes a description of experiments that have been conducted at the ISU-IAC to develop operating experience and experimental techniques. In addition, initial results are discussed.

Reactivity Monitoring Using the Area Method for the Subcritical Venus-f Core within the Framework of the Freya Project
Accelerator-Driven Systems (ADS) could be employed to incinerate minor actinides and so partly contribute to answer the problem of nuclear waste management. An ADS consists of the coupling of a subcritical fast reactor to a particle accelerator via a heavy material spallation target. The on-line reactivity monitoring of such an ADS is a serious issue regarding its safety. In order to study the ...
متن کاملStatus Report on High Fidelity Reactor Simulation
This report presents the effort under way at Argonne National Laboratory toward a comprehensive, integrated computational tool intended mainly for the high-fidelity simulation of sodium-cooled fast reactors. The main activities carried out involved neutronics, thermal hydraulics, coupling strategies, software architecture, and highperformance computing. A new neutronics code, UNIC, is being dev...
متن کاملStatus Report on SHARP Coupling Framework
This report presents the software engineering effort under way at ANL towards a comprehensive integrated computational framework (SHARP) for high fidelity simulations of sodium cooled fast reactors. The primary objective of this framework is to provide accurate and flexible analysis tools to nuclear reactor designers by simulating multiphysics phenomena happening in complex reactor geometries. ...
متن کاملSLAC Modulator System Improvements and Reliability Results
A. Abstract In 1995, an improvement project was completed on the 244 klystron modulators in the linear accelerator. The modulator system has been previously described [ 11. This article offers project details and their resulting effect on modulator and component reliability. Prior to the project, we had collected four operating cycles (1991 through 1995) of MTTF data [2]. In this discussion, th...
متن کاملThree Flavor Neutrino Oscillation Constraints from Accelerator, Reactor, Atmospheric and Solar Neutrino Experiments
We discuss constraints on three flavor neutrino mixings from the accelerator and reactor experiments, the Kamiokande multi-GeV data, and the solar neutrino observations. The LSND result is excluded at 90%CL by the constraints imposed by all the data of reactor and accelerator experiments and the Kamiokande multi-GeV data if the mass scale required for the solution to the solar neutrino problem ...
